May 2009

FRIDAY 15 MAY
FESTIVAL LAUNCH DAY
 
Venue:  New Forest Centre, Car Park Lyndhurst.
Time:    6.00 pm – 8.00 pm
The Festival begins with Alice leaving the Waterloo Arms by pony and trap at 5.45 pm arriving at the New Forest Centre at 6.00 pm.  She will then join invited guests at a party to open the Festival.

 

FRIDAY 15 MAY – SUNDAY 17 MAY (inclusive)
FLOWER FESTIVAL

Venue:  St. Michael & All Angels Church, High Street, Lyndhurst.
Time:    Friday/Saturday 10.00 am – 5.00 pm
Sunday 12.30 – 5.00 pm
Admission: £2 adult - free for children
Spectacular flower arrangements, created by ladies with a love of flowers, will adorn every nook and cranny of this beautiful Victorian church. Alice Hargreaves was a regular worshipper at the church.  Visit her simple grave before you leave.

 

MAD AS HATTERS
LYNDHURST PRE-SCHOOL and ST. MICHAEL & ALL ANGELS INFANT SCHOOL

Children from the Pre-School and Infant School have created two beautiful collages  which will be on display at the Flower Festival.  Look out for the Pre-School display of some 50 hats to portray ‘The Mad Hatters Tea Party’. 

 

SATURDAY 16 MAY & SUNDAY 17 MAY
DROP-IN ‘ALICE’ LAUNCH WEEKEND

Venue: New Forest Centre, Car Park, Lyndhurst
Time:  10.00 am – 4.00 pm   
Admission: Children FREE.  Suitable for all the family. 
The New Forest Centre invites you to ‘drop in’ at the Centre for the launch of the Alice Festival.  Storytelling, Village Walks, Badge Making, Alice Bingo and a Printing Workshop are just some of the activities on offer.

 

SATURDAY 16 MAY
CROQUET ON THE LAWN & GARDEN PARTY

Venue:  Queen’s House, High Street, Lyndhurst (by invitation of Forestry Commission)
Time:    12 midday – 4.30 pm
Admission:  £2 adult  £1 child under 12
Enjoy a game of croquet, listen to the band whilst enjoying a cream tea and stroll around the many stalls.   Enter the fancy hat competition and win a prize.

 

SATURDAY 16 MAY
LOCKERLEY SILVER BAND

The Lockerley Silver Band, under its leader, Richard Taylor, hails from Lockerley a village between Romsey and Stockbridge and was formed in 1880   The band rehearses weekly and its 25 members enjoy the camaraderie and enjoyment of making music together. 

 

SATURDAY 16 MAY & SUNDAY 17 MAY
VILLAGE WALKS

Meet: New Forest Centre, Car Park Lyndhurst
Time:  11.00 am
Fee:  £1
Join one of our knowledgeable guides, Georgina Babey or Geoff Green, as they take you around the village that Alice knew and loved. 

 

SATURDAY 16 MAY
WHITE RABBIT TREASURE HUNT

Meet:  Outside the Workmen’s Club, High Street,  Lyndhurst
Time: 10.00 am – 2.00pm
Admission: £1
Meet the White Rabbit who will give you a map and clues and have you hunting all around the High Street, All children must be accompanied by an adult. Organised by Helen Corvus from the ‘Rabbits Against Road Kill’ .

SATURDAY 16 MAY
FENWICK 2 MAD HATTER FUN RUN

Start:  11.00 am
Join the staff and users of Fenwick 2 in a Mad Hatter Fun Run.  Collect a sponsor form from reception or call 02380 282862 for e-mail/postal form.  The run is approximately 2 miles and is for all abilities.  

 

SATURDAY 16 MAY – MONDAY 31 AUGUST
FAMILY MAP AND COMPASS TREASURE HUNT AROUND LYNDHURST

Entry:  £2 per sheet from ‘Down to the Wood’, Romsey Road, Lyndhurst
Find and answer a list of clues, using map co-ordinates and a compass, to win one of two donated £25 gift vouchers.  Completed sheets to be returned by 31 August.  Winners to be announced on 5 September.

 

SUNDAY 17 MAY
RUSTIC SPORTS

Venue:  Lyndhurst Fire Station, Southampton Road, Lyndhurst
Time:  late morning through the day
Admission: FREE
Lyndhurst Firefighters host this fun-filled event suitable for all the family. Watch teams and individuals as they compete in obstacle races, wellie-throwing, negotiating the slippery pole and many more rustic sports.  Enter a team from your organisation. Refreshments available.

 

SUNDAY 17 MAY
TOWER OPEN DAY

Venue:  St. Michael and All Angels Church
Time:  12.30 – 4.30 pm
Admission:  £1
Join the 8 members of the team of bellringers of St. Michael and All Angels Church and try your hand at bellringing.   You will receive a certificate to mark your expertise!

 

SUNDAY 17 MAY
VICTORIAN CRICKET MATCH

Venue: Bolton’s Bench, Lyndhurst.
Time: 2 pm onwards
Dressed in Victorian costume, the cricketers from Ashurst Cricket Club will battle it out with another local team in a game of around 40 overs.  The picturesque cricket pavilion has hosted cricket since 1774.  Pimm’s and cream teas on sale.

 

MONDAY 18 MAY
GOLF CLUB OPEN DAY

Venue: New Forest Golf Club, Southampton Road, Lyndhurst
Time:  advance booking only
Admission £10.50 (special rate for the Alice Festival)
New Forest Golf Club offers Lyndhurst residents the opportunity to play a round of golf at the club where Reginald Hargreaves was a founding member in 1888.  To book your place, please call 023 8028 3094 quoting ‘the Alice Festival’.

 

MONDAY 18 MAY - FRIDAY 22 MAY (inclusive)
NEW FOREST CENTRE AND SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

Suzie Moore from the New Forest Centre and Diane Roberts, print maker, will hold workshops in some New Forest Schools and the children’s work will be on display in December in the New Forest Centre.

 

TUESDAY 26 MAY - THURSDAY 28 MAY
DROP-IN ‘ALICE’ DISCOVERY DAYS

Venue: New Forest Centre, Car Park, Lyndhurst
Time:  10.00 am – 4.00 pm
Admission:  Children FREE.  Suitable for all the family.
The New Forest Centre invites you to ‘drop in’ at the Centre for lots of fun and family ‘Alice’ activities.

 

THURSDAY 27 MAY
MAD HATTER’S TEA PARTY FOR GROWN-UPS

Venue:  Community Centre, Car Park, Lyndhurst
Time:  3.30 – 5.00 pm
Admission:  £5 for GROWN UPS (by ticket only) from Community Centre Office.
What could be more fun than tea with the Mad Hatter?  This is a party for the grown-ups only (why shouldn’t they have some fun?). There will be all sorts of delicious things to eat and games to play.

 

SATURDAY 30 MAY
LYNDHURST BOWLING CLUB OPEN DAY

Venue:  Lyndhurst Bowling Club, Sandy Lane, Lyndhurst (next to Vernon Theatre)
Time:  10.00 am onwards
Admission:  Free
Members of Lyndhurst Bowling Club invite you to join them in their 80th year of bowling.  Just wear flat shoes – everything else will be provided - and expert help will be on hand to guide you. 

 

SATURDAY 30 MAY
VILLAGE WALK

SUNDAY 7 JUNE
SCAVENGER HUNT & BBQ for TENS and TEENS

Venue:  New Forest Golf Club, Southampton Road, Lyndhurst
Time:   4 pm
Admission:  £5
This is a special afternoon out for young adults!  The £5 admission fee includes a scavenger hunt, tester golf session, games and BBQ.   Amazing value for money!

 

FRIDAY 12 JUNE
FRIDAY NIGHT IS MUSIC NIGHT

Venue:  Lyndhurst Baptist Church, Chapel Lane, Lyndhurst
Time:  6.30 pm
Admission Adult £5  child £2.50   by ticket only from all churches
Members of Lyndhurst Baptist Church invite you to a community sing-in for all ages.  Join in the singing of a wide variety of popular songs, old and new, and raise the roof!  Includes finger buffet.

 

SATURDAY 13 JUNE
TALK ON ‘OLD LYNDHURST’ and DISPLAY OF OLD PHOTOGRAPHS

Venue:   Vernon Theatre, Sandy Lane, Lyndhurst
Time:   Exhibition opens 2.00 – 4.00 pm.   
Talk at 7.30 pm
Admission: Exhibition free. 
Talk £5 -  tickets in advance from Mad Hatters Tearooms, Pinx, and New Forest Centre or on the door.
Interesting display of old photographs during day followed by talk in evening on ‘Old Lyndhurst’ by local historian, Georgina Babey, who has written books about Lyndhurst and its environs. Talk followed by cheese and wine.

 

SATURDAY 21 JUNE
TREASURE HUNT AROUND ALICE’S VILLAGE & BARBECUE

Venue: Meet and finish at Nondescripts Club, Car Park, Lyndhurst
Start:  Any time between  2.00 and 3.30 pm
Admission: £1 adult competition;  50p per child clue sheet
For all the family on two levels – easy for children and more of a challenge for adults!  Read the clues and look around the village to answer the questions.  Children must be accompanied by adults.  Barbecue from 3 pm.   Prizes!
 
FRIDAY 26 JUNE – TUESDAY 30 JUNE (inclusive)
ARTS EXHIBITION

Venue:  St. Michael & All Angels Church, Lyndhurst
Time:   Friday/Saturday/Monday  10 am – 4.30 pm  
Sunday 12.30  - 4.30 pm
Tuesday 10 am – 12 noon
Admission:  Free
Members of St. Michael and All Angels Church host this Art Exhibition in which local Hampshire Artists have been invited to display their high quality and affordable work.  The church will provide the perfect setting for the paintings.   Refreshments available.

 

SATURDAY 27 JUNE
WOODSIDE SINGERS ‘CUSHION CONCERT’   

Venue: St. Michael & All Angels Church, Lyndhurst
Time: 7.30 pm
Admission:  £6 tickets on sale from Mad Hatters Tearooms, Pinx, Down to the Wood or on the door
Conductor Robert Osborne and the choir bring you a musical impression of life as it might have been during Alice Hargreaves’ many years in the village. Also readings and hand bell ringing. Bring a cushion to sit on.  Refreshments available.

 

SATURDAY 27 JUNE
VILLAGE WALK

Meet: New Forest Centre, Car Park Lyndhurst
Time:  4.30 pm

Take a stroll around Lyndhurst with one of our knowledgeable guides and discover the many historical and fascinating ‘Alice’ places of interest. The end of the walk is timed to coincide with opening time at a local hostelry!

 

SATURDAY 27 JUNE
TOWER OPEN DAY

Venue:  St. Michael and All Angels Church
Time:  12.30 – 4.30 pm
Admission:  £1
Another opportunity for you to visit the bell tower and try your hand at bell ringing.  You will receive a certificate of your expertise in campanology.

 

MONDAY 29 JUNE
HAND BELL RINGERS

Venue: St. Michael & All Angels Church
Time:  2.00 – 4.00 pm
The hand bell ringers will be performing in the church during the Art Exhibition.  Take time to sit for a while and enjoy their melodic sound.

Venue: St Michael’s and all Angels Infant School
The Queen of Hearts and Alice’s Friends invite the children from the Pre-school and Infant School to join them at a royal tea-party.

 

FRIDAY 10 JULY & SATURDAY 11 JULY
‘ALICE’S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND’ & ‘THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS’

Venue:  Queen’s House Gardens, Lyndhurst (by kind permission of Forestry Commission)
If wet, performances in the Vernon Theatre
Time:    Gardens open at 6.00 pm for picnics; performance at 7.00 pm
Admission:  £8 adult/£4 child in advance from ‘Down to the Wood’, Romsey Road, Lyndhurst.    £10 adult/£5 child at the gate.

Lewis Carroll’s famous characters brought to life in this production by the award-winning Lyndhurst Drama & Musical Society. 
NB Bring a low-backed chair and warm clothes.  Parking (except disabled) in the main car park off the High Street. 

 

SUNDAY 12 JULY
TALENT SHOW AND BEER FESTIVAL

Venue: New Forest Inn, Emery Down
Time: 3 – 6 pm
Entry: £2 for performers only.
Come along to the garden of the New Forest Inn where anything goes from poetry, singing, playing a musical instrument, telling jokes – the X Factor has nothing on this !   Relax with a beer and enjoy!

 

FRIDAY 17 JULY
ALICE’S CHURCH

Venue:  St. Michael & All Angels Church
Time: 6.30 for 7 pm
Admission:  £5 on the door.
Enjoy wine and nibbles before tour of church where Alice Hargreaves and her family worshipped.  Discover the fascinating story of the Hargreaves family connections with the church.  See the famous Pre-Raphaelite windows and listen to stories about their creators.

WAG & BONE SHOW and ALICE ACTIVITIES

Venue:  Emery Down Village Hall and Christ Church Emery
Time: 2.30 pm
Admission: Adults £1.50 Child FREE Dogs £1.00 with free entry to all dog competitions
Dog Show with a twist and an afternoon of fun.  Cream teas, stalls, plants.  Family activities linked to Alice.  Alice Hargreaves was first President of the Emery Down and Bank WI and a benefactor of the church and school.

 

SUNDAY 9 AUGUST
WORSHIP IN WONDERLAND

Venue: Appletree Court
Time: 3 – 7 pm

FESTIVAL BALL & CELEBRATION DINNER

Venue:  Lyndhurst Park Hotel, High Street, Lyndhurst
Time: 7.00 pm  - midnight
Admission: £35 by ticket only from ‘Down to the Wood’, Romsey Rd, Lyndhurst.
Dress:  Black tie or fancy dress
Celebrate the Festival by coming along to this very special Ball and Celebration Dinner, organised by Jan Smart and her committee.  Enjoy the special dinner, then dance the night away and try your luck on the tombola! 

 

FRIDAY & SATURDAY 18/19 SEPTEMBER
ALICE IN LYNDHURST – THE LIFE OF ALICE HARGREAVES

The premier of a play written by local playwright NICK MELLERSH
Venue:  St. Michael’s & All Angels Church
Time:  7.30 pm
Admission: £6 – tickets in advance from Mad Hatters Tearooms, Pinx, New Forest Centre  or on the door
A look at the life of the real ‘Alice’ .  It will feature flashbacks to her past and extracts from the Alice books.  Performed in the setting of the beautiful Victorian church with its many Alice family connections.

Fascinating local history exhibition of how we used to live in the small hamlets of Emery Down, Gritnam, Bank and Allum Green.  Photographs and exhibits depicting stories of a time gone by.

A stunning display of art work, created by local schools and Freya Gardner of Brockenhurst College. Also photographs of some of the highlights of the Alice in Lyndhurst Festival 2009. 
                    

SATURDAY 5 DECEMBER AND SUNDAY 6 DECEMBER
ALICE IN WINTER WONDERLAND

Venue:  Appletree Court, Lyndhurst
Time:    Saturday  4.00  - 8.00 pm    Sunday 12.00 – 4.00 pm
Admission:  Adult £2   Child £1
Join Alice in Winter Wonderland at New Forest District Council’s headquarters at Appletree Court, Lyndhurst.  Take a wander with Alice and her wonderland friends through the decorated grounds and meet Santa and his helpers in his Christmas grotto.

 

SATURDAY 12 DECEMBER
CHILDREN’S CHRISTMAS PARTY

Venue: Lyndhurst Community Centre
Time: 2.00pm – 5.00pm
Admission FREE to children under 10 years
An afternoon of fun and games for children to be hosted by members of Lyndhurst Community Centre
