| Alice in Lyndhurst |
Alice in Lyndhurst Festival Summer 2009
WHY?
Why not? The most popular Village event of the year is the Fun Day.
People love the feeling of everyone doing things together as a community and have suggested similar events.
Alice Hargreaves, the inspiration for Alice in Wonderland, lived in the village all her married life and is buried here.
Alice and her husband Reginald were involved in many village activities from cricket to WI, and Emery Down and Lyndhurst churches and schools.
There are a wealth of opportunities for different groups of all ages in the village to take part and organise activities based on the time she lived in the village from the 1870s until the 1930s.
Activities could be purely for pleasure or fund raising for a particular group or identified Lyndhurst Area Plan initiatives – improving children’s play activities for example.
It could prove an attraction for visitors and locals with an opportunity to exploit the Alice connection with themed goods, shop window displays and events in pubs and clubs. |
| WHAT sort of activities could be held? Suggestions so far include |
• Mad Hatter’s Tea Party
• Painting and craft activities
• Games and competitions
• Drama based on the Alice Theme – play
• Story telling
• Shop window competition, etc. etc.
• Alice film/video
• Victorian cricket, bowls, tennis and golf matches
• Croquet on the lawn followed by tea/picnic
• Art and Craft exhibition
• Photography display
• Flower exhibition |
• Village sports and picnic Olde Time Music Hall/concert/entertainment using local talent?
• Display of photos of old Lyndhurst - slides

|
WHO would be involved?
Anyone and everyone who is interested.
Contact would need to be made with all groups and organisations from schools to pubs that have a connection or interest in the village to see if they are interested in taking part and organising or helping at an event that could raise funds for their group or the village.
If there is sufficient support a planning group would be needed to co-ordinate the activities. |
WHEN?
An event of this size has to be planned well ahead and needs lots of support.
It needs to be in the warmer months to enjoy outdoor activities and avoid events such as the New Forest Show.
Activities would probably begin the weekend beginning Friday 18th July, catching the last part of the school term and the beginning of the holiday season |

INTERESTED?
Some groups have already said they will help but to make an Alice festival happen we need whole-village support.
There will be an open meeting to discuss an Alice festival on Tuesday 3rd June at 7.30pm, venue to be confirmed.
