Now don’t groan everyone because I’m back for the time being and wherever I go Clerk’s Corner isn’t far behind.
Quite a lot has happened since I left, not least of which is the planning application for the Lyndhurst Park Hotel which has now been refused.
It was great to see the way the village came together to voice their real concerns about the PegasusLife application and there were some excellent letters and comments.
It really goes to show what a wealth of knowledge there is in this village and how vehemently against the application people were.
Well done to all of you.
Now for some good news – Lyndhurst Parish Council is to have its own parish office.
I will write more about this next month when I have concrete information but it will be somewhere that you will be able to visit to gain information both about the Parish Council and the work it is doing.
We also hope to be able to put our archives out on display, where appropriate, as we have records dating back to 1864 when the Parish Council was founded and earlier in the case of the Cemetery as that came under the auspices of the Burial Board, previous to being adopted by the Parish Council.
Talking about the Cemetery, we haven’t finalised a definite date yet but we are hoping to hold an open day in the Cemetery Chapel so people can come and look around at all the improvements that have been taking place during 2016 and early 2017.
We now have electricity installed which means we have heating and lighting.
I do know the Cemetery Committee Chairman, Adrian Wiltshire, wants to hold the open day when the bluebells are out which is when the Cemetery really looks at its best.
There will be an opportunity then to view the Cemetery records and hopefully the new maps will be available so if you have relatives buried in the Cemetery or have pre-purchased a plot we will be able to supply information.
Our thanks must go to Michael Grant who has put in so much time, all on a voluntary basis, to ensure that our maps are up to date and our records complete.
I see that an item I wrote about in my last Clerk’s Corner, ie for August 2016 was to tell you that the two seats that had been placed in the public open space in Lyndhurst car park were not going to be left there permanently.
As it happens their position has been moved although they are still on site and thanks must go to NFDC for letting us keep them.
All the seating is well used in that area.
However we also now have the Arthur Phillip oak memorial bench which was unveiled on Sunday January 29 2017 by Dan Snow, assisted by Captain Shane Craig (naval attaché representing the Australian High Commissioner). The oak bench seat is set into a brick plinth which contains 17th century bricks kindly donated by the Norris family.
On hand was Lyndhurst Parish Council Chairman Mark Rollé who thanked all those both in the UK and Australia who had been involved in this joint project between Lyndhurst Parish Council and the New Forest Centre and in funding of the new memorial bench.
Mark mentioned particularly Denis Smith and the Fellowship of First Fleeters and the Sydney-Portsmouth Sister City Committee in Australia, Colin Read (NFDC), Keith Mans (HCC Councillor) and Jill Colclough (NFDC) who designed it.
Paul Trend (Project Manager for the bench and plaque) and local historian and Parish Councillor Angela were also thanked.
Of course we must also remember former Parish Councillor Len Cornell and his wife Jennifer who put so much time and effort into the project and the Heritage Lottery Fund who helped to make it all possible.
The Rotary Club of New Forest have also donated a blue plaque for the wall by Vernalls, Goose Green, where Phillip and his wife lived and farmed.
Dan Snow referred to the skills Phillip had learned and took with him from the New Forest to Australia. Phillip may have learned his expert seamanship in the Navy but his governorship was learned right here in the New Forest.
We also took the opportunity to remember Bev Major who attended a Parish Council meeting in 2013 to alert us all to the significance of Arthur Phillip to Lyndhurst and the New Forest in general and without his wise words none of this would have taken place.
Another reminder also that a group of Councillors and local people are running Picnic on the Pitch again this year.
It will be a similar event to Picnic in the Park so please reserve the date in your diary

The next Parish Council meeting will be held on Tuesday 14 March 2017 at 7.15 pm in Lyndhurst Community Centre.
Why not come along to learn what your Parish Council does for the local community.
There is an opportunity for members of the public to air their views at the commencement of the meeting.
