When I wrote my October Clerk’s Corner I had no idea of what was in store for the Parish Council and, as many of you will know by now, it wasn’t good news.
We have now narrowed down the fact that some time from late afternoon on Wednesday, 22 September to early morning of Thursday, 23 September approximately 130 commemorative plaques were taken from the wall of the garden of remembrance at Lyndhurst Cemetery.
We can only assume that this despicable act was undertaken in order to gain a small amount of money for their scrap value.
This scrap value would have been a tiny fraction of both their sentimental value to those who put them on the wall and the cost of providing a new plaque.
I have received numerous phone calls from relatives anxious to replace the plaques and I am busy at the moment, together with the Cemetery Committee Chairman, in trying to find the best possible source of new plaques at the most competitive price.
One thing to be noted is that the Parish Council has decided not to allow any more bronze or brass plaques in the future.
From now on we are suggesting that only granite be used.
For our October Parish Council meeting we welcomed Tim Lawton and Adrian Grey from Hampshire County Council Highways Department.
We were also joined by some members of the public and this led to a lively question and answer session.
The main problems obviously centred around the ongoing traffic situation in the village, which seems to have been worse than ever this summer.
Residents in Sandy Lane are now finding that their road is being turned into a rat run and there is also the ever present problems experienced in Mill Lane by drivers trying to avoid the long queues of traffic trying to get through the village.
The condition of roads and pavements also brought some interesting questions, especially because The Meadows and Knightwood Avenue/Elcombes Close are to receive attention to the pavements but Hillary Close pavement, which is in a far worse state, seems to have been forgotten. We were told that The Meadows, etc are to receive a top dressing whilst Hillary Close needs a complete resurfacing and this is in the current programme of work.
Last month I mentioned that the Parish Council planned to hold a village fete in 2011. I had hoped to be able to tell you the date for this but we are still trying to ensure that we do not clash with any other organisations’ events in the village so news will have to wait until next month.
However, I can tell you that it is going to happen and it will be held in the Recreation Ground.
We do still have a few allotments available to rent. The cost of tenancy for a whole year is £20 for a starter plot, £30 for a medium sized plot and £60 for a large sized plot.
Please get in touch if you think you would like to give this a try …. no experience necessary.
It looks like, once again, there will be no bugler for Remembrance Sunday on 14 November. Any offers would be very welcome so please get in touch.
