Clerk’s Corner - February 2012

This page was last updated on January 26, 2012

At the January Parish Council meeting we discussed the Queen’s Jubilee and the Olympic Torch Relay.

Both events are pretty close together with an extra Bank Holiday for the Jubilee in June and the Olympic Torch passing through our village on 14 July.

So, if the Parish Council, are to plan any events, it will need residents to get involved as well.

First, of all what would you like us to do.

Whilst both are national events they will both be quite different.

Queen’s Jubilee celebrations usually include a street party, but that would be difficult in Lyndhurst.

However, something could be done in the Recreation Ground although it would need some careful planning.

As for the Torch Relay the focus for this would naturally seem to be the High Street and surrounding areas so perhaps the Chamber of Trade and/or Village Lighting and Decorating Committee could give some ideas.

The emphasis for the day, we are told, should be to welcome visitors and residents from all over the New Forest so this would be a good opportunity for traders to fill their shops with people.

We are looking into parking options for the day.

Whatever is decided we will need all your ideas so please send a representative from your organisation to our next Parish Council meeting.

We will start at 6.45 pm in order to give time for a discussion on the subject.

I shall be writing to as many of the local organisations as possible but please take this as a general invitation to attend our meeting.

In the meantime, if you do have any ideas please get in touch with me or any of our Councillors.

Hampshire County Council have made an offer to the Parish Council of an oak tree to commemorate the Queen’s Jubilee.

We have accepted this offer but have yet to decide upon an appropriate place to plant it.

Councillors held a meeting during February with Paul Garrod who is Team Leader for HCC in this area regarding traffic management issues, excluding traffic lights and Richard Bastow who is responsible for the care of the network of roads in the Forest and provides an interface with colleagues in Winchester.

Topics under discussion included non observance of speed limits in and around the village, requests for 30 mph speed limits to the top of Clay Hill and beyond Broughton Road on the A337 and past the turning to Bank on the A35.

Concern was expressed regarding the new road markings at the C17 junction with the A35 and the general volume and speed of traffic in Emery Down on the C17 and Mill Lane.

Debate took place regarding the “rat run” in Sandy Lane and possible ways to alleviate the problem will be discussed at the February Parish Council meeting.

Parking problems in Elcombes Close, Knightwood Avenue, Chapel Lane and The Meadows were raised and Hampshire County Council will be undertaking a survey at Knightwood Avenue during busy periods.

The possibility of pedestrian crossings on Shrubbs Hill Road and Southampton Road are an ongoing issue.

The Parish Council enquired whether any further action could be taken to prevent HGV lorries using the High Street between Romsey Road and Gosport Lane and we were told that HCC are undertaking projects that give route information for hauliers.

A copy of the notes made at this question and answer session will be available on our website following the next Parish Council meeting.

The next Parish Council meeting takes place on Tuesday 14 February 2012 at 6.45 pm in Lyndhurst Community Centre.

Members of the public have the opportunity to speak during public participation at the commencement of the meeting so why not come along and hear what the Parish Council is doing for you?
