Patients with cardio-vascular and other health problems can now attend GP referral exercise classes in Lyndhurst thanks to a partnership between Fenwick2 Health and Well-being Centre and New Forest District Council.
NFDC’s Healthy Horizons programme has been offering exercise referral in council health and leisure centres for some time for people recovering from heart problems or with conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes or depression but the new classes in Lyndhurst will improve access for clients in the centre of the New Forest.
Fenwick2 will offer two classes on Mondays. The new programme started on Monday June 8th at 2.45pm to 3.30pm for cardio vascular referral and 3.45pm to 4.30pm for balance and mobility.
Clients have to be referred onto the programme in the usual way by local GPs and only have to pay £2.95 per session.
All participants receive a health assessment by a qualified GP referral consultant and then participate in tailor-made exercise programmes for a period of 20 subsidised sessions.
The scheme has benefited from a funding grant from the Rural Communities Group, arranged by Cllr Pat Wyeth, district councillor for the Lyndhurst ward.
“I have a long history with the former Fenwick Hospital, as both myself and my daughter were born at the Fenwick,” said Cllr Wyeth.
“I am very pleased to be able to help keep Fenwick2 open for use in the community. I particularly welcome the joint partnership between the district council and Fenwick2 to promote well-being and help residents maintain good health.”
Lisa Dillane, Centre Co-ordinator at F2, said she was very pleased to be able to offer this extended service to local people.
“We are very pleased to be running these sessions at Fenwick2, making it easier for clients to access this vital service,” she said.
Fenwick2, a not-for-profit social enterprise, has a small gym on site and exercise and therapy specialists. It also houses an NHS Long Term Conditions Centre, dealing with people who have had a stroke, diabetes, Parkinson’s disease or heart failure.
