Over 95%
of all the criminal cases brought to court are dealt with by
Justices, either in the Adult Court or in the Youth Court where
specially elected and trained members of a Youth Court Panel
carry out this work.
For a single criminal offence committed
by an adult, Justices sentencing powers are normally limited
to the imposition of afine upto £5000 and/or a period
of not more than 6 months in custody. Justices also have a
substantial civil juridiction particularly in relation to family
work. |
