"The New Forest is one of the areas in Hampshire where the figures for drinking and driving are on the increase, " said
chairman of the New Forest Road Safety Council, Cllr Mrs Pat Wyeth.
"We are
determined to drive those figures down here in the Forest and
asking motorists to think before they drink.
Better not
to drink at all rather than work out how much you think you can
drink before you are over the limit."
Working with Hampshire County Council's road safety unit, George Gales Brewery, and the Hampshire Ambulance Service, the New Forest 's Road Safety Council launched bid to make the roads of the New Forest safer over the festive season and into 2005 at Towle's Inn , Walhampton Hill, Lymington on Monday, December 13.
In support of the initiative, Gales Brewery are making a unique offer to party-goers - if there are four or more revellers in the group, then the driver will be supplied free alcohol-free drinks or coffee.
"The Gales' offer means a driver can have some festive fun and still be safe on our roads." said Cllr Wyeth, "With
animals freely roaming the roads of the New Forest especially
at night the danger is magnified and even more so if a motorist
has had one too many.
"I am urging drivers to think about themselves and their families before they are tempted to drink and drive. Nothing
could be worse than the news that a loved one has died as a result
of drink related incident at this time of year." |
