Local Lyndhurst councillors are urging motorists to cut their speed around Lyndhurst before someone is killed or seriously injured.
Cllr Pat Wyeth, NFDC councillor for Lyndhurst and Chairman of the New Forest Road Safety Council, has joined forces with Cllr Mel Kendal, leader of New Forest District Council, to remind motorists that 30mph is the maximum speed in and around the village.
New road signs have been introduced on the one way system and in the high street to reinforce the message and improve road safety for the area.
Cllr Wyeth said drivers need to be aware of the dangers of going too fast on our roads.
“Some motorists, both locals and visitors, use the routes around Lyndhurst as a speed track," she said. “The 30mph limit has been in force since 1995 on these roads and it is time that motorists realise there is no excuse for people exceeding the limit near shops, homes and schools.”
The 30mph limit has been in force on the high street for over forty years.
Council leader Mel Kendal said: "It is important motorists stick to the speed limits around Lyndhurst as the village is often busy with pedestrians as well as motorists. These new signs should act as a reminder to motorists to cut their speed down on these small but busy roads.”
Mobile safety cameras, an initiative of the Safety Camera Partnership, have also been in use for several years on the A337, to monitor and enforce speed restrictions in Lyndhurst. |
