High hedges give householders welcome privacy, but can also be a nuisance to neighbours.
New legislation introduced today (1 June, 2005) aims to help neighbours solve disagreements over high hedges.
Guidance issued by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister gives information on how disputes can be resolved between neighbours, but if this fails how the local council may be able to help.
New Forest District Council has produced an information pack about the new guidance, which sets out how it is administered locally and how neighbours can try to resolve disputes.
“Householders who feel that a neighbour’s hedge is depriving them of light can now take their complaint to the council, but in most cases this will be unnecessary,” said Cllr Jeremy Heron, portfolio holder for economy and planning.
“The guidance makes it very easy for householders to work out if they would have a case without the expense and trouble of making the dispute into a formal complaint. Cases such as these are always best dealt with in a sensible and amicable way between neighbours.”
NFDC’s guidance on high hedges is available on the council’s website.

The ODPM website also has a wealth of useful information on high hedges.
