If you’re willing to volunteer your time, enjoy giving something back to the community and like the thought of spending a healthy day out in the open air, then join Forest Force for its annual litter pick and help give the Forest its spring clean!

Forest Force is a partnership between New Forest District Council, the Forestry Commission and the New Forest National Park Authority, committed to keeping the Forest litter-free.

Forest Force is looking for organisations such as businesses, parish councils, youth groups and rotary clubs, to participate in voluntary litter picks during this week-long annual event from 7-13 March, 2009.

If you aren’t able to participate during the spring clean week, litter picks can be organised for voluntary groups throughout the year.

Councillor Edward Heron, New Forest District Council’s portfolio holder for environment, said:

“I cannot stress enough how important this voluntary initiative is to the conservation of the beauty of the New Forest and National Park.

Littering and fly-tipping is a serious offence and clearing up after people who have dumped their rubbish here is costly and time consuming.

It is heart-warming that the community is prepared to voluntarily assist in the annual Forest Spring Clean.”

Vicky Myers, volunteer coordinator at the Forestry Commission, said:

“Every year I continue to be overwhelmed by the amount of public support we receive; it’s a reflection of how proud people are of the Forest and how committed the community is to preserving its beauty.

We hope that the response from volunteers this year will be as good, if not better. It doesn’t matter if you only have a small amount of time to offer-every little helps.”

If you are part of an organisation who is interested in taking part, contact Roger Sired at New Forest District Council on 023 8028 5948 or email roger.sired@nfdc.gov.uk

Volunteers will be sent a map of areas to choose the location of their litter pick.

A series of public litter picks will also be held during the week.

If you are interested in getting involved, contact Alexis Reeve at the Forestry Commission on 023 8028 6840 or email alexis.reeve@forestry.gsi.co.uk
