Things are happening at St Michael’s!
A Community Archaeological Project is planned for this spring in advance of work in the churchyard to provide better turning space for cars, particularly wedding and funeral cars.
There is an opportunity for you to join in what promises to be a fascinating excavation.
A condition on the planning permission requires us to undertake an archaeological investigation, not only because graves will be affected but also recognising that the work is next to an old royal manor.
We are proposing to do this as a Community Project with volunteer support, managed by our consultants, Wessex Archaeology.
A timetable has yet to be finalised, but it is likely to be sometime in the spring.
The project could take up to six weeks (working Monday – Friday) and use eight or ten volunteers at any one time.
The work will not all be digging - some volunteers will, for example, be moving sieved spoil to a storage pile, others might be handling, sorting or recording artefacts.
Would you like to help?
