SCA Trafalgar Dentistry is to open its sixth not-for-profit dental practice in Hampshire - giving initially 6000 more people in the Totton, Ashurst and surrounding areas access to an NHS dentist.
The newly refurbished Totton Dental Centre, at 123 Salisbury Road, Totton, will meet a shortage of NHS dentistry places in the area and will open its doors to new NHS patients on April 1.
Anyone wishing to join the new practice can ring the Hampshire Dental Helpline on 0845 050 8345 in order to register.
The practice, with five surgeries and highly experienced staff, is run by not-for-profit social enterprise SCA Group. SCA Trafalgar Dentistry already has five other practices offering NHS dentistry under contract to NHS Hampshire in Gosport, Southampton, Holbury and Portsmouth.
When the new Totton centre is in operation, SCA Trafalgar will be providing NHS dentistry to over 88,000 people in total in Hampshire. The Totton centre will also offer an enhanced service for children, with a qualified dental therapist available for dental care work and advice. "There is a great need for NHS dentistry places in Totton and the surrounding areas," said Sam Smith, Director of Trafalgar Dentistry. "We are extremely grateful to NHS Hampshire for enabling us to open up a new practice to meet this need. "We are very excited about the new service and have managed to recruit some highly trained and experienced staff to work with us. We look forward to welcoming our new patients in April and we also plan to hold some open days in the summer so that local people, local dentists and families can come and find out more about what we offer."
Sam said she was pleased that the centre has been able to offer employment opportunities to local people, with two new posts for trainee dental nurses.
She also praised Ferndown building firm Henley's Building and Maintenance Ltd for working flat out to get the new centre ready. "They have gone the extra mile and have been brilliant," said Sam.
The Totton Dental Centre was formerly a private practice run by local dentist Dr Nigel Charlton. The centre has been extensively refurbished in the last two weeks and Dr Charlton will be staying on to continue working with his existing patients. Trafalgar Dentistry offers both NHS and private dentistry in all its practices, but as a social enterprise it reinvests any financial surpluses it makes into improving services.
