The Christopher Tower Library situated in the New Forest Museum
in the heart of Lyndhurst has a superb collection of books, maps,
photographs and prints.
There is nothing to equal its collection of history, natural history and
general material anywhere else in the whole of the New Forest area.
The
library was officially opened by Mrs Mary Fagan, the Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire
in March last year.
It is owned and run by a charitable trust, the
New Forest Ninth Centenary Trust, which also owns the Museum.
The library has grown largely due to the generosity of many local people and
organisations which have donated books of great local interest and value.
A recent generous gift was made by the senior Forestry Commission Warden,
John Gulliver of Ashurst.
This donation of some rare and unusual works was
made formally to the Librarian, Jude James, in the presence of the chairman
of the trust, Ednyfed Hudson Davies and his fellow trustee, Amanda
Barker-Mill.
The gift included two large and splendid volumes on British
Butterflies by W.H. Frohawk who did so much of his work in the New Forest.
In these books are plates illustrating 68 species of butterflies in full
colour.
The books were published nearly 100 years ago. Among the collection
of other precious works given by John is also included a book of New Forest
claims of 1660, but not published until 1776.
The Christopher Tower Library was created for the benefit of the public and
is available without any charge but can only be used for research and
reference purposes.
It is open Wednesday - Saturday 10am-4.30pm and at other
times by appointment. A helpful staff is always on hand to
guide users
towards the best sources for any project they may be pursuing. |
